Ethan Anthony, 21, moved to Vinalhaven with his family when he was 17. Anthony's father, Tom Anthony, grew up on Vinalhaven and always wanted to come back.
"I'm thankful that we got to move here," Ethan said. "Everything's more family-oriented here, there's a lot warmer feeling, I think. There may be feuds, but at the end of the day we can count on each other. It's like we're one big family."
Ethan got his first taste of the lobstering life at age 10, when he went to haul with his grandfather, Dallas Anthony.
"I thought it was cool," he said. "It was a whole other world I didn't know about." After that, lobstering was always on Ethan's mind. He started watching lobstering videos on Youtube and thinking about how he could get back out to Vinalhaven. Ethan finally got his chance when he was 14. He spent the summer on the island, hauling with Dallas.
Ethan is now the captain of his own boat, a 35' Mitchell Cove called INSTINCT.
"When I first started I felt so vulnerable," Ethan said. "It's hard at first, when you're learning. It's scary, but if you keep going, eventually it will pay off. It's satisfying figuring out where to set your traps, and when you set and you know they're going to come back [and make some money], it's awesome."
Ethan likes the risk involved with lobstering.
"It's so 'make it or break it'. You can sink or die, or you can come in and make $2500," he said. "The contrast between the risk and the benefit, it's crazy. I like the game of it, I guess. Trying to push it, trying to do good. But you're still out there with Mother Nature. It humbles you."
